TBT: Nike Lobster SB Dunks Spreading The Boston Flair!
“What is Boston famous for?” We may ask. Harvard? Fenway Park? Well yes, these are definitely famous venues. However, when you’re visiting the city, the first thing that will come to mind is that you must try lobsters! That’s what Nike and the Boston streetwear brand Concepts had in mind when they decided to make the Nike Lobster SB Dunks!
Nike Dunk Lobster: A History
Concepts started as a store inside a tannery that was among the first to sell Nike SBs. Today, it’s one of the most famous streetwear brands worldwide. So it was natural for Nike to work on a lobster project with Concepts store. They worked together and tried to get all the details right. The end product was the Nike SB Dunk Lobster!
The OG Nike Lobster
Nike and Concepts went out of their way to create a shoe that looks and feels like a lobster. The insole looks like a bib and the uppers boast a Lobster-inspired palette. Nike went as far as adding a rubber band (or claw band) around the toe box! Some pairs came in a special wooden box that said “Concepts Fishin Co.” and contained butter-like laces, Concepts Fishing Co. shirts, and a wet nap!
The Dangerous Blue Nike Lobster!
The marketing department at Nike went above and beyond for this release. Legend says that a monster was attacking Boston citizens. A fisherman also disappeared while fishing! But you can rest easy, this was just a publicity stunt by Nike. The new Nike SB Dunk Lobster was inspired by the rare blue lobster. A 6-minute video dropped to hype people up in the weirdest way for the release.
The Nike Lobsters came in a foam hazmat box, so it’s not your average pair of dunks! The blue replaces everything red from the first colorway. However, the kicks went with the same materials and kept the toe box rubber band!
The Lobster Goes Yellow
Now, this was a release that consisted of 36 special pairs that were gifted to the design team! Some other pairs went to friends and family. So yes, this wasn’t a public release at all. However, some of the owners flipped them and earned some really good cash!
Release Date: July 27, 2009
Avg. Resale Value: $14,717
A Decade Later: Green and Purple Nike Lobster SB Dunks!
Nike Dunk Lobster went underwater for almost a decade and then re-emerged in two new colorways! Both colorways feel like a mashup of previous colorways. The purple colorway is the combination of the red and blue Dunks. On the other hand, the yellow and blue colorways give us the green Nike Dunk Lobster! All the lobster-ish details stayed the same, minus the speckles that got smaller.
